Every day brings new drama about Trump’s legal perils. Here’s why today really matters
Story by Ariana Baio

On 30 March 2023, the streets surrounding Manhattan Criminal Court in downtown New York were lined with media, protesters, bystanders and police officers in awe of a historic moment many thought would never happen: the criminal indictment of New Yorker and former president Donald Trump.

But now, one year later, the New York criminal case appears only a speck in the galaxy of legal problems that have mounted against the former president.

What is the ‘African plume’ that could bring 35C heatwave conditions to UK?

Story by Stuti Mishra • 4:36 pm - 22-5-2023

The UK is bracing itself for a scorching summer as meteorologists have predicted the arrival of the much-discussed “African plumes” later this month which can make temperatures soar to 35C.

In a widely reported forecast, Exacta Weather said African plumes are likely to sweep across Europe between June and September.

The weather phenomenon, characterised by a mass of hot air originating from the Sahara desert, have the potential to bring multiple heatwaves.

While such a scenario may be unprecedented, experts agree it is not impossible, given recent warming climate trends.

On Sunday, the UK witnessed temperatures above 20C in several areas across England and Wales, making it the hottest day recorded this year so far.

The coming days are set to get warmer with “above average” temperatures expected by the end of May.

As the UK eagerly awaits the summer heat, there is fear that the conditions can get worse again this year, with heatwave-like conditions stemming from the arrival of the anticipated African plumes.

Here’s what exactly an African plume is and how hot it can get.

What is an African plume?

An African plume is a weather phenomenon in which hot air masses from the Sahara desert in Africa are transported northward towards Europe, including the UK.

This plume of hot air carries with it high temperatures and dry conditions, leading to exceptionally warm weather.

During an African plume event, southerly or southeasterly winds carry the hot and dry air across the Mediterranean Sea towards the British Isles. As the air mass moves over the warm waters of the Mediterranean, it absorbs heat and moisture, further intensifying its warmth and humidity.

This process creates a distinct narrow band of hot air, resembling a feather-like structure on weather maps.

How hot will it get when African plumes arrive?

When an African plume reaches the UK, it brings a period of unusually hot temperatures, often exceeding 30C.

These high temperatures can persist for several days or even weeks, resulting in heatwave conditions.

However, the intensity and duration of the heatwave can vary from year to year, depending on atmospheric conditions.

James Madden of Exacta Weather told The Mirror that there are “some strong indicators” for a “warm to hot September this year” due to the African plumes.

“The peak of these heat surges in June and July could see maximum temperatures ranging in the low to mid-thirties, and the late summer/August heatwave could sign off summer 2023 with temperatures ranging a notch or two higher than this,” he was quoted as saying.

US, Australian military aid for Ukraine on the table

Story by Dominic Giannini • 3h ago - 5-5-2023

Further assistance for Ukraine is on the cards ahead of the federal budget amid speculation Australia and the United States could announce a joint support package as soon as the end of the month.

The two nations are reportedly working together on an assistance package that could mirror Canberra's agreement with Paris to jointly supply ammunition to repel the Russian invasion.

The appetite for a joint military package, first reported by the Australian Financial Review and verified by AAP, comes ahead of President Joe Biden visiting Australia.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said Australia would continue to support Ukraine.

"We are a big supporter of the Ukrainian efforts to repel the Russian invaders and that will be represented in the budget," he told reporters in Canberra on Friday.

"We salute the quite remarkable courage and commitment of the Ukrainian people."

The Quad summit brings together leaders from Australia, Japan, India and the US in Sydney in the coming weeks to focus on peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Ukraine's ambassador to Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko said he wouldn't speculate on any upcoming package but welcomed any assistance.

"It's too early to talk about it but it would be good if something like that came because that would help Ukraine a lot," he told AAP.

The NATO security summit in July, which Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will also attend, is another opportunity to unveil a joint aid package.

Kyiv has submitted a wish list of aid ahead of the federal budget on Tuesday, which includes Hawkei armoured vehicles, artillery and ammunition.

Hundreds of Ukrainian-Australians rallied around Australia on Saturday, calling for the government to provide Hawkeis to help defend their homeland.

Amid concerns about aid fatigue with the war entering its second year, Mr Myroshnychenko said it was important democratic nations continued to stand up to Russia and protect against rising authoritarianism.

"It is extremely important to protect democracy. We need to make sure we create the deterrence, and the deterrence we need is to make sure Ukraine wins," he said.

"We need to make sure we don't embolden other authoritarian leaders to do something similar in the region."

Ukrainian-Australians want Canberra to provide Hawkei armoured vehicles to defend their homeland.

Australia’s ‘most important’ security paper in decades: Defence Strategic Review

Story by Sky News Australia • 7h ago - 29-4-2023

The latest Defence Strategic Review is “arguably” Australia’s most important security document “in decades”, says Former Howard Government Minister Peter McGauran.

“It sets out – bravely I thought – China’s territorial expansion by name and in detail,” Mr McGauran told Sky News Australia.

“It sets out that the Americans can not by themselves check China’s expansion, declares the Indo-Pacific as the most important and conflicted region in the world because it brings China and America head-to-head.

“It allocates the right priorities which are over the horizon – defence capabilities as a deterrent by way of missiles and nuclear submarines.

“Very impressive document – which is why the government’s accepted its 62 recommendations unchanged.”

Macron praised in China for 'brilliant' Taiwan comments

Story by AFP • Yesterday 3:52 pm - 12-4-2023

Emmanuel Macron's unexpected suggestion that Europe not "follow" US policy on Taiwan is being hailed as a "brilliant decision" this week in China, where state news outlets and social media users are lauding his independence.

The French president sowed confusion across the international community -- and left Western allies bristling -- after calling for "strategic autonomy" on Taiwan following last week's trip to China, where he met with President Xi Jinping.

The 45-year-old Macron enjoyed a rockstar reception during his three-day visit, including being mobbed by selfie-chasing students in the southern city of Guangzhou, and local media has covered his subsequent comments widely, focusing on the phrase "strategic autonomy".

An opinion piece published Monday by the Chinese Communist Party-run Global Times said the comments were "clearly the result of Macron's long-term observation and reflection" and represented a path that was "relatively objective, rational and in line with Europe's own interests".

"Some people want to construct a false Europe in public opinion, masking true European voices and interests," the article added.

Chen Weihua, Brussels bureau chief for state-run China Daily, wrote on Twitter that "Macron's words about EU strategic autonomy and resisting a new Cold War and decoupling will also prove to be a brilliant decision".

Beijing, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory to one day be taken back, has long sought to break Western resolve on the thorny issue.

And Macron's recent words on distancing Europe from Washington on the subject of Taiwan suggest China's efforts might be having some success.

"Daring to talk openly about autonomy," commented a user of social media site Weibo under a news article on Macron, "Europe has progressed."

'Brilliant decision'

While the reputations of most Western leaders in China have suffered in recent years, Macron enjoys a largely favourable public image -- an attitude made evident by the hordes of students in Guangzhou.

His willingness in the recent interview to differentiate French foreign policy from that of the United States on the issue of Taiwan helped bolster that fan base.

One Weibo user commented: "Macron's ideas are very good. Europe's arrogance and inaction for many years have led to extreme strategic passivity, being pulled along by the US."

Beijing also Wednesday praised Macron's remarks, saying it was "not surprised" by the negative reaction from some in the West.

"Some countries do not want to see other nations become independent and self-reliant, and instead always want to coerce other countries into obeying their will," foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told a regular briefing.

"An insistence on strategic autonomy wins more respect and more friends, while coercion and pressure only brings more resistance and opposition," he added.

But such triumphant Chinese perspectives have also been tempered by more sober voices contending that geopolitical realities necessitate that France and Europe remain largely aligned with the United States.

Hu Xijin, a prominent political commentator and former editor-in-chief of the Global Times, wrote Monday on Weibo that -- despite Macron's rosy comments -- it was "unrealistic" for China to think France would side with it in future confrontations with Washington.

‘The biggest defence deal’ of the 21st century so far: AUKUS

Story by Sky News Australia • 8h ago - 9-4-2023

The Spectator Chairman Andrew Neil says AUKUS is probably “the biggest defense deal” of the 21st century so far.

“It really brings the country locked together and it’s a lot more than submarines,” Mr Neil told Sky News Australia.

“It is a recognition that Britain, Australia, America, other allies in the Pacific region … need to stand together, need to counter the rise of China.”

Mark Zuckerberg’s ‘year of efficiency’ now means another 10,000 layoffs and a hiring freeze on 5,000 more jobs
BYTRISTAN BOVE
March 15, 2023 at 1:07 AM GMT+11

Meta’s brutal year of efficiency is only just getting started. After laying off around 11,000 employees in November, the company is resorting to even more firings and job cuts. The Facebook parent is terminating around 10,000 jobs and halting hiring for 5,000 open positions, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in a blog post Tuesday, in the latest tech sector push to lower costs and streamline operations.

Zuckerberg did not specify what areas of the company would be most affected by job reductions, although Meta’s recruiting team is one of the departments getting downsized, as slower hiring rates are likely to be a permanent reality at the company moving forward.

The first round of Meta layoffs affected around 13% of overall staff, and employees have been bracing for more terminations for weeks ever since Zuckerberg made publicly clear that the company was going to double down on efficiency and become leaner in every department during its last quarterly earnings call with investors last month.

The CEO declared at the time 2023 was going to be the company’s “year of efficiency” as it aimed to become a “stronger and more nimble organization.” He added that while Meta would double down in certain competitive areas including artificial intelligence, unnecessary and underperforming projects were on the cutting board. Of the November layoffs, Zuckerberg said it was the “beginning of our focus on efficiency and not the end.”

A turbid economic climate for tech companies has been especially difficult for social media platforms like Meta, which in addition to Facebook also owns Instagram and Whatsapp. Advertising revenue at the company has been slowing since last year, while investors and Meta shareholders have also grown critical of Zuckerberg’s decision to steer the company into uncharted waters with his metaverse push, first announced in late 2021.

Like many other tech companies, Meta expanded wildly during the early years of the pandemic and hired aggressively, but has since been forced into downscaling as the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates to cool down the economy last year. The company had more than 87,000 employees in September, a 28% increase from the year before.

In his blog post announcing the latest layoffs, Zuckerberg mentioned Meta’s “year of efficiency” six times. He referred to the company’s A.I. vision as “our single largest investment” and stated that the company’s long-term goal is to build A.I. “into every one of our products.” Zuckerberg also said A.I. will be employed within the company to improve efficiency, calling it one of Meta’s “tools that will make us most effective over many years.” He said Meta is planning to use A.I. to “help engineers write better code faster, enabling us to automate workloads over time, or identifying obsolete processes that we can phase out.”

But Zuckerberg also suggested Meta may have permanently moved on from its freewheeling past to focus on efficiency and cost-cutting. He warned the company may still struggle to stay profitable in the immediate future as conditions in today’s market environment threaten to persist past this year.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls on Anthony Albanese to combat Sikh separatist attacks on temples in Australia

Story by By South Asia correspondent Avani Dias, foreign affairs reporter Stephen Dziedzic, and Som Patidar in New Delhi • 8h ago

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Australia to protect Hindu temples after several were vandalised by supporters of a Sikh separatist group seeking to form an independent state.

The comments were the only public sign of tension between the countries during Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's tour of India, which has been heavily amplifying the deepening relationship between the nations.

"It is matter of regret that there have been regular reports of attacks on temples in recent weeks in Australia," Mr Modi said at a joint press conference while standing next to Mr Albanese.

"Naturally these reports of temple attacks concern us all Indians. It is depressing for our hearts," he said.

"I shared our sentiments and concerns over the issue to Prime Minister Albanese and he assured me that the safety of the Indian community is a special priority for him."

Australia has become a staging point for the Khalistan movement, which seeks to create an independent state for Sikhs in northern India's Punjab region.

Pro-Khalistan Sikh activists have migrated to Australia, where temples have been defaced with anti-Hindu graffiti and brawls have broken out between the religious communities.

Attacks on Hindu temples in Melbourne

In January, three temples in Melbourne were targeted in the lead-up to a vote by Sikh Victorians in a non-binding referendum on the independent state, which led to a protest by members of pro-India groups at Federation Square.

Police deployed pepper spray during a small brawl between the rival groups at the protest.

US-based group Sikhs for Justice has been holding the referendums in countries with high Sikh populations, like Canada and Australia.

Australia's Sikh population has grown substantially in recent years, with the number of Sikhs in the country rising nearly 60 per cent between 2016 and 2021.

The Indian High Commission in Canberra has also been pressing Australian officials to stop the referenda from going ahead, arguing that pro-Khalistan groups have been stoking religious hatred and threatening India's territorial sovereignty.

That's forced Australian officials and politicians to walk a fine line, defending the rights of Khalistan supporters to hold protests and political gatherings, while stressing that Australia will not tolerate any violence or incitement of religious hatred.

During Mr Albanese's tour this week, Australia's High Commissioner to India, Barry O'Farrell, also stressed that the "so-called referendum" has no legal standing.

But pro-Khalistan activists say the main goal is to assess the demand for a separate state within India among the migrant Sikh population.
